In our previous article, Elon Musk & Neuralink Creates Chip To Combat Cognitive Diseases, we discussed the medical benefits of the technology Elon Musk’s company Neuralink, has created and started to test. The goal of the chip is to help patients who are suffering from cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. Musk and his company also have the hope that the chip can be used to allow humans to interact with technology without the use of hands. In recent events, this hope may soon become a reality as Facebook creator Mark Zuckerberg has joined Musk and Neuralink on the journey of making mind-reading technology a reality.

Mark Zuckerberg and his company have started to fund research on brain-computer interfaces that can pick up on the user’s thoughts and put them directly into words. The algorithms have been created by researchers, and can already decode the words from the user’s brain activity in real-time. Facebook’s vice president of AR/VR Andrew Bosworth tweeted saying “Today we’re sharing an update on our work to build a non-invasive wearable device that lets people type just by imagining what they want to say. Our progress shows real potential in how future inputs and interactions with AR glasses could one day look.”

Musk’s company Neuralink has already created the implantable chip that, in the future, would allow those who have it to control technology, like smartphones and computers, without the use of hands. They have already tested the implant on monkeys and have seen success, and Musk and his company hope to begin human testing by the end of 2020.

The idea of implantable chips is not new to the science world. Many paralyzed patients have such equipment that allows them to control things like robotic arms or have used things such as neuroheadsets to have control over smaller types of technology like mouse cursors. It is believed that a chip that can read minds is still years away from being available commercially, but research on such chips has increased rapidly in recent years.
